Misaskim was established with the goal of helping to alleviate tragedy with compassion, while providing a multi-faceted array of services for the aveilim (mourners). Misaskim's mission is to provide support and assistance to individuals experiencing crisis or tragedy by providing them with vital services while safeguarding the dignity of the deceased.
Misaskim of Greater Washington strives to assist during the challenging time after the petirah (death) of an immediate family member. Misaskim operates a network of shiva supply gemachim (supplies available for use at no charge) in many shuls in the Greater Washington area. Resource assistance may also be available when a person does not qualify for government benefits and does not have sufficient funds for a funeral from a commercial funeral home.
The seeds for Misaskim of Greater Washington were laid in 2010 after the petirah of HaRav Gedaliah Anemer, zt"l. Rabbi Anemer was considered the mora d'asra of the Washington area's Orthodox community — the chief rabbi to whom all others deferred. As an internationally respected authority, news of his petirah quickly extended far beyond Greater Washington. Misaskim of New York was quick to take action, arranging delivery from New York to Silver Spring of shiva supplies, including those intended to improve the comfort of the aveilim. That special care and sensitivity, designed to enhance the comfort for the aveilim beyond their basic needs, is what inspired the creation of Misaskim of Greater Washington.
